The Tuesday group: one labrador, two cockapoos and a terrier who has appointed himself walk leader. Four dogs, one hour, one very muddy path down past the boating lake. Groups are capped at four so every dog gets picked up, walked and dropped off within the hour.
New dogs join slowly. They meet the group one at a time on neutral ground before their first full walk, so nobody comes in cold. Once they're in, the group settles into its own rhythm: the cockapoos stick together, the labrador patrols the edges, and the terrier reports back on everything.
The walk doubles as training. We practise recall when the group splits up, we settle them past joggers and buggies, and we end with a sit-and-wait at the gate before anyone gets their lead on. It keeps the group calm on the street and makes them easier at home afterwards.
